R & E (1992): Formerly this species was of regular occurrence throughout the state, but it was apparently most abundant in the cypress swamps in the southeastern corner and along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Widmann (1907) stated that it "is a regular, though, not numerous, summer resident nesting in cypress swamps." He also mentioned breeding records for Clark Co. and for the Kansas City area.

R & E (1992): Bush (in Harris 1919b) apparently had the last nesting record for the state: two pairs bred near Courtney, Jackson Co., in the summer of 1912. The latest record (Harris 1919b): two birds near Courtney were first seen on July 8, 1919 and remained in the area for two weeks. Shortly thereafter it apparently became extirpated as a breeder.
