R & E (1992) Between 20 and 34 birds were released in Lafayette Park, St. Louis, in April 1870 (Widmann 1907; Jones 1934). By the mid-1930's it had become established in isolated colonies along the Missouri River., as far west as Washington, Franklin Co., and during the 1940's it colonized much of St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. To the north at Hannibal, Marion County, it was first recorded breeding in 1946 (Musselman 1950). During the mid-1970's single birds were seen as far south as St. Francis County (B. Sammelson, NN 47:2; B. Sutterfeld, NN 49:17).
